Obituary

Fern Magnuson was born Fern Opal Winters to Jacob and Hazel Winters on February 5, 1918 in Spokane, WA. Her father was an engineer on the Great Northern Railroad, leaving her with a life-long love of trains. She grew up in Hillyard, where she attended school. She was in the first graduating class at John Rodgers High School. She married Forest Bishop in 1938 and had two children. The family moved to the Tri-Cities in 1952, where Fern worked in the accounting department at Sears. The marriage ended in divorce, and Fern later married Lloyd Magnuson. After two years in Anchorage, the couple moved to the Spokane area. Fern was active in the Lutheran church, the Sons of Norway, and the Grange. She also volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels for many years. She kept in touch with friends, including a group of women from high school. Lloyd died in 2002 and Fern moved to the Tri-Cities again to be near to her daughter. In the Tri-Cities, she was a member of the Kennewick Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, and the Grange. She volunteered in the gift shop at Kennewick General Hospital. She loved animals and always cared for several dogs and cats. Fern is survived by her children: daughter, Robin Crook and son-in-law, Bill Crook of Kennewick; her son, Michael Bishop and daughter-in-law, Barbara Bryan of Portland, OR; Phillip Crook; Richard Crook; Janene Law; Kristene Killinger, and their spouses and families, all of the Tri-Cities, WA; Seth Bishop of Portland, OR; Holland Bishop and family of Livermore, CA; six grangchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. We know that Fern would appreciate that remembrances be made to the Benton-Franklin Humane Society.
