Henrietta Elizabeth Bowne Dame was born to Dr. and Mrs. Charles Bowne on October 28, 1922. During her early years she frequently amused herself by spending time with the familiar patients in her father's Washington, D. C. waiting room. This independent spirit and caring behavior were characteristic of her life. She also treasured visits from her Granny which were precious, full of stories and excursions. Curly haired and blonde, she soon was given the nickname "Honey." It followed her to Duke University, where she pledged Tri- Delta, finding sisterhood and lifelong friends. In June 1943 she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree. After college, she went to work in the War Production Board where she worked with her future mother- in- law. Married on Oct 21, 1945, to Ensign Allen M. Dame, she became known as Elizabeth Dame, a proud Navy wife. She and her husband would move 24 times in 22 years, have 4 beautiful children, and enjoy 57 years of marriage. At the end of their Navy career, the Dames settled in Los Altos, California, for 35 years. Elizabeth was a devoted mother, avid gardener, and accomplished bridge player. She was a Girl Scout Leader in many communities, Panhellenic President while stationed in Key West, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her generous spirit flowed to her church which she supported with her garden's bounty and her homemade sandwiches. Elizabeth spent her last few years at Hawthorne Court where she made wonderful new friends. She passed away peacefully on August 24, 2008. She is survived by her daughters Dianne Bob Macduff of Kennewick WA, Suzanne Lowd of Santa Clara CA, and Nancy Jeff McCourt; daughter-in-law Joan Dame of Redwood City CA; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren who knew her as Nana. She is preceded in death by her husband Allen Dame and son Mark Dame. Memorial services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Center in Kennewick, Washington, on October 4, 2008, at 11:00 am. Her ashes will be inurned next to her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Salvation Army.
