Obituary

June Murdock Carrell Taverniti Porter "?Over time, the sails of the mothership will be fitted to the daughtership; and the final touch- the red ragged flag- hers- will be flying topmost of my ship?I will glide again, but this time, under the best sails inherited from my mother?" from When a Good Mother Sails From the World by Clarissa P. Estes A remarkable life began on June 2nd, 1927 in Gloucester, England, and ended May 16th, 2010 in Kennewick Washington. Between those dates and places June filled her journey with the love of her family and many life long friends. June grew up in England during WW II with her parents Helen and Andrew Murdock, and her brother Graham - her younger brother Wayne was born after she immigrated to the United States. Huddling in a backyard bomb shelter during air raids, plus knowing life's basic supplies as Rations, helped nurture her quiet strength and skills for navigating through life. June became a War-Bride when she met and married Romie Carrell, a handsome American soldier stationed in Gloucester. When the war ended she immigrated to America and arrived in Seattle as a shy, quiet, and very naive 18 year old who had much to learn about living with "The Yanks". Years later her words and experiences became part of a book titled Good Bye, Picadilly about the War Bride experience which was often challenging for young English wives and mothers. She began working as a teller in a bank, and a year later she and Romie welcomed their daughter, Dianne. After their marriage ended, June was considering returning to England, but ended up falling in love with another military man, Frank Taverniti. They were married in 1950 and June's life was suddenly filled with the additional adjustment of being part of a loud Italian family. Kimberly and Jeffrey were born and June's role as a mother was eventually combined with working part-time as book keeper for a family business...plus volunteering at her children's schools and being an active member in the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild. June also became an incredible cook and was a willing student when it came to learning how to create wonderful Italian dishes. There were many large parties in her and Frank's busy home, especially in honor of visiting family from England, which sometimes meant feeding a hundred guests. Becoming a Nana was pure joy to June, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved spending time with her. She became a "Bonus Nana" when she married Warren Porter in 1980. They made their home overlooking the water in Edmonds, where June was able to enjoy an even larger family and dear friends on a full time basis. In the early 90?s they moved to the Bellevue / Kirkland area. A few years after Warren passed away, June moved to Kennewick in '07 so she could be near Kimberly. This was a selfish joy to Kimberly?s family because it meant more time with their Mom and Nana. June was born with an outwardly striking beauty. However, her looks and glamour paled in comparison to her beautiful heart. She always tried to be kind to all, even when some hardships in life evolved into a challenge to gather all her strength and move on. The honor of learning from her continues. June's family would like to express their gratitude to all June's cherished friends old and new for sharing and enriching June's life. We appreciate Fluer di Lis in Kennewick for their remarkable capacity to care for June with all the love and respect which she so deserved. We feel like they are part of June's family. In addition to her three children Dianne Carrell, Kimberly Taverniti-Martyn and Jeffrey Taverniti, June is beloved by her two brothers in England Graham Jean and Wayne Jackie, their families and cousins; son-in-law James Martyn; step-children Cole Porter Marsha, Robyn Davis, and Erin Peterson Bruce; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A Celebration of June's life will be held July 17th, 2-4 pm, at the Edmonds Community Center, 201 Fourth Avenue North, in Edmonds Washington. Rather than flowers, the family encourages contributions be made to Seattle Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice dedicated to children.
