Mary Ellen Bayne, 91, died on October 18, 2015 at Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick, WA. She was born in Everett, WA to parents James Ernest Long & Zelda Kinney. She was one of six children, the next to youngest daughter. As a child, Mary's main household chore was to replenish wood in the wood box for use in cooking and heat stoves. She also picked up groceries for a neighbor lady. When Mary was eight years old, Earl Bayne and his family moved into the house next door. Mary was not happy to have a boy as a neighbor, let alone one close to her age. To make matters worse, Earl attracted more boys to the neighborhood! In 5th grade, Mary began to play the trumpet and took piano lessons. In high school, she was a hard-working student and learned how to operate a business office. She insists that she always had the teachers that gave the most homework! In addition, she attended many basketball and football games. Mary's life centered around church, where she was very involved in the youth group and the Guild Girls. She was also superintendent of the pre-school department. After high school, Mary worked for Paddock Motors, and then Tozer's Pharmacy. In October 1943, she went to work for Boeing in Everett, as secretary to the Production Manager. She was the first secretary hired, and the last one to leave, when the plant closed in October 1945. During the war, Boeing manufactured one plane per day. In November 1944, Mary and her mother traveled by train to New York City. On November 13th, Mary married Earl Bayne at the First Baptist Church in Manhattan. They only had a few weeks together before Earl was shipped out to the Pacific with the US Navy and Mary returned to Everett. After returning from war duty, Earl and Mary started their family. They had four daughters: Joanne, Janice, Judy, and Jeanine. In 1953 the family moved to Moses Lake, and then in 1956, to Renton. They returned to Everett in 1957. In 1969 the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Earl attended Western Seminary. Mary kept busy raising the family, serving in church, helping at school and assisting with Bluebirds. In church, she served as deaconess, choir member, teacher, and nursery worker. At home, she kept the household together and was involved in numerous remodeling projects. Earl retired in 1989 from radio station KPDQ and was given a likely diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease shortly thereafter. Mary began a new chapter in her life as primary cargiver. In 1993, Earl and Mary moved to Oak Grove, next door to Jeanine and Jaime. Slowly, Earl was robbed of memories, and basic skills. In September 1997, he was admitted to Marquis Care Center in Oregon City, where he died on December 22nd, 2005. In recent years, Mary was able to travel and spend time with family in Oregon and Washington. After living in Oak Grove, OR for 22 years she moved to Kennewick, WA to live with Joanne for in March 2014. A year later Mary was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Mary's legacy is a love for and service to others, inspired by a personal faith and love for her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her greatest desire would be that all enter into a personal relationship with God. This faith is also shared by the generations that follow in her footsteps. Mary is survived by her daughters Joanne Gilliland, Janice (Ed) Stortro and Jeanine (Jaime) Ingham; grandchildren Tara (Alan) Zacher, Shelly Gilliland, Lisa (Jamie) Halverson, Joel (Sarah) Stortro, Jeremy Stortro, Erica (Corey) Brooks; great-grandchildren Dietrich Zacher, Ilse Zacher, Thora Zacher, Thad Halverson, Thea Halverson, Zeke Halverson, Claire Stortro, Camren Stortro, Collin Stortro and Sofia Brooks. She is preceded in death by her husband Earl P. Bayne; daughter Judith Ann Bayne; parents; sisters Mabel Collins, Mildred Layton, and Eloise Lambright; son-in-law Dave Gilliland.
