Mary Katherine (Grant) O'Neil was born in Twisp, Washington on February 3rd, 1922, the youngest of seven children of George Edward and Elizabeth Grant. The family moved to Delrio, 18 miles west of where Grand Coulee Dam is today. After attending the one room elementary school in Delrio Mary graduated from Holy Names Academy in Spokane. After high school she married Eli Hass, who had come west from South Dakota to work on the construction of Grand Coulee dam. They moved to Long Beach, California where Eli worked in the shipyard and later joined the Marines, while Mary volunteered with the Red Cross. Eli was killed at Iwo Jima and Mary moved to Seattle in 1945. In 1950 she married George David O'Neil Jr., a farm boy from Almira who was an accountant for Alaska Airlines, and their three sons were born in Seattle. In 1956 the family moved to Eltopia to develop a farm from sage brush in the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. George O'Neil was killed in an accident in 1965 and Mary continued to farm until 1977 when she leased the farmland out and worked for the Post Office, retiring in 1991. She continued to live on her farm until the fall of 2019 when she moved to a retirement facility in the Tri-Cities. Mary was among the first parishioners of St. Paul's Catholic Church on Glade Road, previously a mission of St. Patrick's Pasco which held services in the Eltopia school cafeteria. She took care of the altar linens and was the wedding coordinator for many years. She was very active in the Home and School Association of St. Patrick's School, supported her sons with their 4-H and FFA projects, and was a member of the Emblem Club. The Diocese of Spokane opened a retreat house in Spokane in 1959 and Mary and George became parish retreat captains. Up through 2017 she never missed making an annual retreat at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. Mary is survived by her three sons, Michael, Steven, and William, her granddaughter Tiffany Booker (Austin) and great grandchildren Graham and Cash and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The Rosary will be Friday March 18 at 6:00 PM and the Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday March 19 at 12:00 PM, both at St. Paul's Catholic Church 14181 Glade North Road Eltopia, with a luncheon following. The committal will be at Holy Cross Cemetery 7200 N Wall Street Spokane on Monday March 21 at 12:00 PM. Memorials are suggested for Immaculate Heart Retreat Center in Spokane or St. Patrick's School in Pasco. Memorials may be mailed or left at Hillcrest Funerals and Cremation in Pasco.
