Shirley Lorraine Stewart passed away on September 9, 2015. A finer person would be hard to find.
Lorraine was born in 1931, the youngest of three children born to Roy and Sylvia Maulding in Bartlett, Nebraska. She was the much-loved little sister of brothers Melvin and Milen, both of whom preceded her in death.
Her early years were spent in Nebraska, then Yakima and finally the Tri-Cities where she attended Kennewick High School. She married Robert McCalmant in 1948 and they had two children together, Steve McCalmant and Terri Symbol. In 1954 Lorraine remarried and she and her husband Jim Stewart welcomed a third child into the family, daughter Debra Stewart.
After several years as a wife and fulltime mother she began working in the field of telecommunications where her husband was also employed. They built successful careers that took the family to various locations including California, Yakima, Lynnwood and Everett, where they retired in 1990. Tri-Citians at heart, the Stewarts returned to Kennewick, built a home and enjoyed a retirement rich with family, friends and travel.
Lorraine was an excellent wife and mother, but she really excelled in her role as "Grandma" to her seven grandchildren and "Granny" to her great-grandchildren that number 10 and counting. Her unconditional love, support, constant patience and good humor exemplified the characteristics of the ideal grandparent. She will be remembered with love and gratitude for generations.
Hers was a life well lived. She raised a solid family with her husband of nearly 60 years and had a successful career in a time when being a "career woman" was a relatively new concept. She traveled the world, loved her family and friends deeply, and enjoyed life many years beyond what was predicted and expected.
Her strength and will prevailed until she decided that this chapter of her life had been well enough written. She will be sorely missed but joyously celebrated.
At Shirley's request, no services are planned, and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House of Kennewick are welcomed.
